What We Believe

What we believe matters - it shapes how we understand and interact with God and His creation, including humanity and His people.  Below, you'll find our 10 statements of belief, as well as the 3 core declarations of the Baptist Union of Scotland.

  1. The One True God is eternal and exists in three co-equal persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1v26 / 2 Corinthians 13v13)
  2. The nature and character of the One True God is evidenced in the creating and sustaining, ruling and redeeming of the world. (Genesis 1v1 / Psalm 24v1 / John 3v16)
  3. The nature and character of the One True God is revealed in the Old and New Testaments: divinely inspired in their original texts, faithfully translated for us into modern English and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3v16)
  4. Human Beings, created male and female, are image-bearers of God, with intrinsic value and worth, yet all are corrupted by sin and in need of redemption. (Genesis 1v26-27 / Romans 3v23)
  5. God became flesh and was born of a virgin: fully human and fully God, known and worshipped as Jesus Christ. (John 1v14 / Philippians 2v6-7)
  6. God, incarnate as Jesus Christ, lived a sinless life and willingly laid down His life, crucified on a cross, paying the price of humanity’s sin and thus providing opportunity for humanity to be fully reconciled to God. (Romans 5v6-10 / 1 John 3v5)
  7. Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, died and was buried, then raised to life by the Holy Spirit on the third day, ascending to rule and reign at the right hand of the Father. (1 Corinthians 15v3-4 / Hebrews 1v3)
  8. Redemption from sin and eternal peace with God is found only, by grace through faith, in the saving work of Jesus Christ: in His atoning death, subsequent resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father. (Romans 10v9-11 / Ephesians 2v8-9)
  9. The Church is comprised of all who profess that Jesus Christ is Saviour and Lord of their lives: every believer, sealed by and filled with the Holy Spirit, is a member of the Body of Christ, God’s Church. (1 Corinthians 12v12-13, 27)
  10. The Lord Jesus Christ will visibly return in the future for His bride, the Church, at a time appointed by the Father, and they will then live eternally in the presence of God along with all who have died in faith throughout history. (Acts 1v11 / 1 Thessalonians 4v16-17)

As part of the Baptist Union of Scotland, we hold to the Baptist Declaration of Principle.  These 3 declaration statements help to communicate the core beliefs of who we are, and help to shape how we live as a community of faith.

The Baptist Declaration of Principle

1. That the Lord Jesus Christ our God and Saviour is the sole and absolute Authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.

2. That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried and rose again the third day.

3. That it is the duty of every disciple to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.
